A belt with two detachable flags is the core equipment. Most leagues provide these — confirm before purchasing your own. If buying, look for a Velcro-release design that pops cleanly without tangling.
Some leagues require specific flag colors. Ask the coach before ordering.
Molded rubber cleats (same as soccer or football) provide grip on grass fields. Turf shoes work for artificial surfaces. Metal cleats are never allowed. Low-cuts are fine — flag football doesn't require ankle support from heavy cuts.
Most leagues provide game jerseys. Pick up a light practice jersey in a solid color. The jersey must be tucked in during play so flags are clearly visible and accessible.
Athletic shorts without pockets (pockets can catch flags accidentally). Standard athletic shorts work fine. Belt loops are unnecessary since the flag belt clips around the waist.
Not always required in flag leagues, but recommended for contact that still happens during flag-pulling. A boil-and-bite model from any sporting goods store is all you need.
Sticky receiver gloves dramatically improve catching ability, especially in cold or wet conditions. Not required, but most serious players use them. Make sure the size is snug — loose gloves reduce feel.
A pee-wee or junior-size football for ages 6–12; a youth size for 12+. Practice at home by throwing routes in the yard — flag football rewards sharp routes and accurate throws more than athleticism.
Grip and toss often — a kid who can throw a spiral has a huge advantage in flag football.
A set of 10–20 cones lets your player practice route running, agility drills, and flag-pulling technique at home. Cheap, light, and the same cones coaches use at practice.
