Non-contact alternative to tackle football
5v5 Offense
Five-on-five flag football is wide open — every player is a skill position. The center snaps and immediately runs a route, so there are four potential receivers on every play. Great for younger kids learning the game.

Essential Gear
See all 8 itemsFlag Football Belt
A belt with two detachable flags is the core equipment. Most leagues provide these — confirm before purchasing your own. If buying, look for a Velcro-release design that pops cleanly without tangling.
Est. $10 – $25
Cleats or Turf Shoes
Molded rubber cleats (same as soccer or football) provide grip on grass fields. Turf shoes work for artificial surfaces. Metal cleats are never allowed. Low-cuts are fine — flag football doesn't require ankle support from heavy cuts.
Est. $25 – $70
Game Jersey
Most leagues provide game jerseys. Pick up a light practice jersey in a solid color. The jersey must be tucked in during play so flags are clearly visible and accessible.
Est. $15 – $35
Athletic Shorts
Athletic shorts without pockets (pockets can catch flags accidentally). Standard athletic shorts work fine. Belt loops are unnecessary since the flag belt clips around the waist.

Official Wording
A ball carrier is "down" when a defender removes one of their two flags from the belt. There is no tackling, blocking below the waist, or contact after the flag is pulled.
Parent Translation
Instead of tackling, each player wears a belt with two flags hanging off the hips. To stop the ball carrier, a defender grabs and pulls a flag — no contact required. Once a flag is pulled, the play is over immediately. Diving for flags, grabbing the jersey instead, or holding the carrier are all fouls.
