How youth Muay Thai is set up

Youth classes usually start around age six to eight with warm-ups, pad work, and technique, including punches, kicks, elbows, and knees. Contact is limited at first.

Competition, if your child chooses it, is organized by age and weight, with shorter rounds for youth. Rules and protective gear vary by sanctioning body.

The clinch and scoring, explained simply

The clinch is when two fighters grip each other and fight for control, trying to off-balance the other and land knees. It looks like hugging, but it is a core Muay Thai skill.

Judges look for who controlled the exchanges, not just who threw the most strikes. A hard, clean strike or a dominant clinch can outscore many light taps.

Safety basics

Ask the gym how it supervises kids, how partners are matched by size, and what contact rules apply. Gear should fit, and gloves for youth are lighter than adult gloves.
