Softball gloves run larger than baseball gloves (12–14 in) to handle the bigger ball. Outfield gloves are larger; infield gloves shorter for quick transfers.
Buy for the position if known. A shortstop needs a smaller glove for quick transfers; an outfielder needs a longer pocket.
Must be league-certified — ASA/USA Softball stamp required in most youth leagues. Slowpitch and fastpitch bats are different; do not interchange them.
Confirm slowpitch vs fastpitch with your league before buying — they use different bats and the wrong one may be illegal.
NOCSAE-certified helmet required. Youth leagues typically require a face guard. Single-ear flap standard; catchers need a full cage.
Molded rubber cleats for youth players. Metal cleats allowed at high school level and above — check your league rules. Low-cut or mid-cut both work.
Sliding shorts (worn under pants) protect the thighs from turf burns on slides. Most leagues provide the uniform pants — check before buying.
Sliding shorts with built-in padding are worth the upgrade — your kid will slide more than you expect.
12 in for standard adult/high school leagues. 11 in for younger age groups (10U and under). Optic yellow for most leagues; white for some.
Required for the catcher: helmet with full cage, chest protector, and shin guards. Most leagues have team sets — confirm before purchasing your own.
If your kid wants to catch long-term, owning gear is worthwhile for fit and hygiene. Otherwise use the team set.
