Parent guide
What does my child need for their first volleyball season?
Short answer
Volleyball shoes, knee pads, a ball for practice, a jersey and spandex or athletic shorts, and a water bottle. Many clubs supply jerseys, so ask first. The must-have items on this page add up to about $100โ$275. Court shoes matter more than most parents expect, because the sport has a lot of jumping and quick lateral steps.

How youth volleyball is set up
Six players per side play indoors on a court divided by a net. Younger age groups often use lower nets, smaller courts, or fewer players. Matches are usually best of three sets for youth, and best of five for older or competitive teams.
School, rec, and club teams all use slightly different formats. Ask your coach about set length, net height, and whether your league uses a rally scoring system.
Rotation and the libero, explained simply
Every time a team wins the serve back, all six players rotate one spot clockwise. That is why your child sometimes plays at the net and sometimes in the back row.
The libero is a defensive specialist who wears a different color jersey. They can swap in and out of the back row without counting as a regular substitution, and they cannot attack the ball above the net.
Safety basics
Knee pads help with floor dives and digs. Shoes with good grip and ankle support help with jumping and landing.
Ask your coach about warm-ups and how they handle jump training. If your child has knee, ankle, or shoulder pain that lasts, talk to a doctor.
By age and level
- Ages 8โ10
- Fun-focused programs with lower nets and simpler rules. Gear can be basic: sneakers, a jersey, and knee pads.
- Ages 11โ14
- Rotations and specialized positions begin. Volleyball shoes, knee pads, and a well-fitting jersey matter more.
- Ages 15 and up
- Faster, stronger play and more competitive club teams. Gear is the same, but quality and fit matter for jumping and diving.

Common mistakes
- Wearing running shoes. Volleyball shoes give better grip and lateral support.
- Skipping knee pads. Floor digs can cause bruises and floor burns.
- Buying a ball without checking size and weight for the age group.
- Expecting to know rotation order on day one. Coaches teach it step by step.
- Ignoring jersey and number rules. Teams often have to match.
Frequently asked questions
How is volleyball scored?
Either team can score on every rally. Sets usually go to 25 points and must be won by two. A deciding fifth set is typically played to 15.
What is a double contact?
It is when one player hits the ball twice in a row. There are exceptions, such as on a first contact after a hard serve.
What is a four-hit fault?
It is when a team touches the ball four times before it goes over the net. A team gets up to three touches.
Do kids need a libero jersey?
Only if they play libero. The team supplies a contrasting jersey, which your coach will explain.
