Official Wording

Points are awarded electronically or by judges for strikes landing on legal scoring areas (torso, head), with kicks to the head worth more than punches or body kicks.

Parent Translation

Head kicks score the most, which is why you'll see so much emphasis on kicking height and technique in class. Many competitions use electronic scoring socks/vests (called a PSS) that register a strike automatically โ€” no judge argument needed.

What does my child need to start taekwondo?

Short answer

A dobok (the uniform) and a white belt. Sparring gear, including gloves, headgear, a mouthguard, and shin guards, is usually required once a student reaches an intermediate belt and starts contact drills. The must-have items on this page add up to about $113โ€“$212. Many schools sell a starter kit, so ask what is required for the first classes.

How youth taekwondo is set up

Many academies start kids as young as four in a beginner program. Classes cover stretching, kicks, forms, and discipline. Students progress through colored belts.

Taekwondo has two main sides: sparring (kyorugi) and forms (poomsae). Belt colors, order, and testing schedules vary by academy and federation.

Belts, forms, and sparring, explained simply

Unlike open-ended systems where promotion depends on the instructor, taekwondo usually runs on a predictable testing schedule. Ask the academy for its belt chart so you know what is next and when the next test is likely to be.

Forms are non-contact routines that students memorize and perform. Sparring is scored with points, and head kicks score the most, which is why classes emphasize kick height and technique. Many competitions use electronic scoring gear.

Safety basics

Sparring gear should fit and stay in place, and it is usually required for contact drills. Ask the academy how it supervises sparring, how partners are matched by size and belt, and what contact rules apply to kids.

If your child has a head injury, stop and follow your league's protocol and your doctor's advice. See our injury basics guide for general guidance.

By age and level

Ages 4โ€“6
Beginner programs focus on listening, balance, and basic kicks. A dobok and belt are usually enough.
Ages 7โ€“11
More forms and light sparring drills. Sparring gear is usually required at intermediate belts.
Ages 12 and up
Competition becomes an option, with divisions by age, belt, and weight. Rules depend on the organization.
