What does my child need to start Brazilian jiu-jitsu?

How youth jiu-jitsu is set up

Most academies run a dedicated kids program, often starting around age four or five. Classes mix warm-ups, technique, and supervised practice with a partner.

Kids use a separate belt and stripe system from adults, and promotions are usually at the instructor's discretion. Academies differ, so ask how often classes meet and how they handle progress.

Tapping out, explained simply

Tapping is not losing. It is the main safety system. When a student taps with a hand or foot, or says "tap", their partner stops right away.

In competition, positions can score points even if nobody taps. Getting on top, passing the legs, and taking the back all count. A submission ends the match immediately.

Safety basics

Teach your child to tap early and often, and to tell the instructor about any pain. Keep nails trimmed and the gi clean, and ask the academy about its hygiene rules.

Ask how the academy supervises kids, how partners are matched by size, and what its policy is on competition. If your child has a head, neck, or joint injury, stop and follow your doctor's advice.

By age and level

Ages 4–7
Play-based classes focused on movement, balance, and following instructions. A gi and a belt are usually all you need.
Ages 8–12
More technique and live practice with partners of similar size. Mouthguards are optional in many academies; ask yours.
Ages 13 and up
Competition becomes an option, with age and weight divisions. Federations and academies set their own rules.
