The original combat sport โ€” boxing is pure striking with the hands, built around footwork, defense, and ring control. Youth programs emphasize technique and conditioning well before any sparring contact.

Official Wording

Judges score each round separately: the winner of a round is awarded 10 points, the loser 9 or fewer, with wider gaps for knockdowns or one-sided rounds.

Parent Translation

Think of it like a report card scored round by round, not a running tally. A close round is 10-9. If someone gets knocked down or completely dominates a round, the gap gets wider. Add up all the rounds at the end to get the final score.

Boxing Gloves (youth sizing)

Youth-sized gloves for bag work, pads, and later sparring. Your gym will recommend an oz weight โ€” too big makes it hard for small hands to make a fist.

Est. $25 โ€“ $50

Hand Wraps

Go on under the gloves to protect the wrists and knuckles. Learning to wrap hands properly is one of the first things a new student is taught.

Est. $8 โ€“ $18

Mouthguard

Required once any sparring starts. Boil-and-bite works fine for youth students.

Est. $5 โ€“ $15
